The Chicago Cubs have traded Welington Castillo to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Yoervis Medina.
Castillo, 28, has played his entire six-year career for Chicago after the catcher was signed as an amateur free agent in 2004.
Medina, 26, who had a 3.00 ERA and one save in 12 games for the Mariners this season, will report to Triple-A Iowa.
The Pirates today acquired left-handed pitcher Jayson Aquino from the Blue Jays for cash considerations. Aquino has been optioned to Single-A Bradenton. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, GM Neal Huntington.
Aquino, who was designated for assignment on May 5, went 2-2 with a 2.81 ERA in five starts this season with Single-A Dunedin of the Florida State League.
The 22-year-old Aquino was originally signed by the Rockies as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2009. He entered the 2013 campaign rated as Colorado’s ninth-best prospect according to Baseball America.
The Kansas City Royals have acquired catcher Drew Butera from Los Angeles Angels for minor league infielder Ryan Jackson.
Butera, 31, hit .190 (4-for-21) in 10 games with the Angels this season.
To make room for Butera on the 40-man roster, Kansas City transferred left-hander Tim Collins to the 60-day disabled list. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery in March.
